Moscow’s military involvement on the Syrian front is increasing. The Russian military said on Sunday it was helping the Syrian army “push back” rebel forces in three provinces in northern Syria, supporting the government of Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Vladimir Putin.

“The Syrian Arab Army, with the help of the Russian Aerospace Forces, continues its operation aimed at repelling a terrorist attack in the provinces of Idlib, Hama and Aleppo,” the Russian military said in a statement.

“During yesterday, rocket attacks and shelling were carried out in places where fighters and equipment were concentrated,” the Russian military added. At least “320 militants were neutralized”, he stressed.

Moscow announced earlier this week that it was bombing rebel targets in the war-torn country, with Russian warplanes hitting parts of Aleppo – Syria’s second city – for the first time since 2016, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Russian military intervention comes after the surprise attack by a coalition of rebel groups that led to the capture of Aleppo.

Moscow is the main military backer of Bashar al-Assad, turning the tide of the civil war in favor of the Syrian regime with its military intervention in 2015.

Tehran: “The situation in Syria is difficult”

According to the Observatory, the attack has claimed the lives of 214 rebels, 137 members of pro-government forces and 61 civilians, including 17 who were killed today.
