In Greece’s commitment to keep Haiti high on the agenda of the Security Council, in Greece’s close cooperation with UNICEF to address the needs of Haitian children and in our country’s support for the efforts of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and its countries region for security, stability and the political transition in Haiti, stated the Permanent Representative of Greece to the UN, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, speaking at the special meeting of the Finance and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations for children in Haiti.

“Greece cares about Haiti, it is a country geographically far from us but we have a very special bond. Haiti was the first country to recognize the new, independent Greek state in the 1830s,” he explained.

“We are working with UNICEF, we are working closely with CARICOM and with neighboring countries to bring stability, security and a peaceful transition of power to Haiti. My country will enter the Security Council from January 1, 2025, so I look forward to participating very strongly in the Haiti file, trying to help bring stability, security to the country,” insisted Mr. Sekeris.

The Greek permanent representative to the United Nations reminded that one of the priorities of Greece after assuming the role of a non-permanent member state in the Security Council is the “Children in Armed Conflict” agenda, which could be very useful in order to alleviate the very difficult situation for children in the country in crisis.
