At least 20 dead, including women, in attack on IDP camp west of Khan Younis
The Israeli army killed at least 39 Palestinians in strikes across the Gaza Strip overnight, rescuers said today, including at least 20 people in an attack that set off a massive fire in tents housing displaced families in a crowded camp.
Today the area was littered with burnt clothing, mattresses and other personal belongings among the remains of the tents.
Rescuers in Gaza said the 20 confirmed dead in the Israeli airstrike there included women and children.
Israel said the strike targeted high-ranking members of Hamas, without giving further details.
Other Israeli strikes were reported in Gaza City, where rescuers said the house where a large family had taken refuge was destroyed and two others were damaged, killing at least three people.
In Rafah, near the border with Egypt, three Palestinians were killed today in an Israeli strike, according to rescuers. Three others were killed in another airstrike in Sejaia, eastern Gaza City, rescuers said.
“Too late” Amnesty International’s report on genocide
According to residents mourning the loss of their own people, these latest attacks show that the new declaration from Amnesty International — that Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza, which Israel has rejected — came too late.
“We don’t see anyone from anywhere in the world standing by us or helping us in this situation. Let them stop this crazy war being waged against us. Let them stop this war,” said Abu Kamal Al-Ashar, who was at the scene.
Human rights group Amnesty International today accused Israel of “committing genocide” against Palestinians since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip in a report it released and wants to send a “wake-up call to the international community”. Israel’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the report as “completely fabricated”, describing Amnesty International as a “merciful and fanatical organisation”.
At a funeral in Khan Younis, resident Abu Anas Mustafa called the Amnesty International report “a victory for Palestinian diplomacy”, although he said it “came late”.
“It is the 430th day of the war today, and Israel has been committing massacres and genocide since the first ten days of the war,” he said.
