After a titanic effort, the temple-national symbol reopens today with an impressive ceremony, offering a small pleasant break for the French president in the midst of a deep political crisis
Response from Paris
The “miracle” happened within five years and Emmanuel Macron won the bet he had placed on its restoration, after the horrific fire of 2019 in the heart of Paris, which shocked the planet. It was eagerly awaited by President Macron, on this day of the rebirth of the temple from the ashes. He believed that it would also be a day of his own personal triumph, before the astonished eyes of mankind.
Time is against him
But in the midst of the invited world leaders, today he walks alone and reduced, without a prime minister and a government. And the president is running out of time, he must act quickly if he wants to avoid the threatened political chaos and the destabilization of the country as a whole. He should normally have already appointed a new prime minister after the fall of Michel Barnier’s government yesterday.
Finally late on Friday night he started the consultations with the so-called “democratic” parties of France. His starting point was the centrist base of the so-called “Macronites”, followed by the Republicans of the Right, with whom he had already got along before the appointment of Barnier anyway. His new goal now is to create a “government of general interest”, as he calls it, with a pillar of a “non-aggression pact” by the participating parties, which will respond to the particularity of the current situation.
The Socialists are willing
The Socialists with Olivier Faure declared they were open to discussing such a government, which stirred the waters in the New Popular Front of the Left. According to the Élysée, the socialists requested that the other three members of the Front be invited for talks. The Environmentalists and the Communists accepted the proposal, but the “Disobedients” of Jean-Luc Mélenchon categorically refused.
They even accuse Macron that behind his actions is an operation to split the Front. These two days, however, are actually for President Macron a break from the extremely complicated political consultations, due to the celebrations for the Virgin Mary, with the hope that on Monday her grace may be able to work her miracle in finding the right prime minister, able to keep at least a rudimentarily functioning government until next July.
