And while the advance of the opposition forces continues, putting under their control one city after another, questions and speculations about the whereabouts of the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, are increasing.

Although the official line from the Syrian president’s office is that he has not left the capital, a source told CNN that Assad remains missing and has not been seen anywhere in Damascus.

Assad’s presidential guard is no longer deployed at his usual place of residence, as it would have been if he had been there, the same source told the US network, fueling speculation that he may have fled Damascus.

Traditionally, the presidential guard travels with the president when he is on the move.

According to the source, rebel forces have no reliable information on Assad’s location and are continuing their efforts to find him.

According to another Wall Street Journal report, Assad remained in Syria until Friday. Last week, his children and his wife traveled to Russia and his brothers-in-law traveled to the United Arab Emirates, Syrian security officials and Arab officials said.

Egyptian and Jordanian officials have urged Assad to leave the country and form an interim council that includes the opposition, the WSJ reports.

Jordan’s US embassy in Washington denied that Jordanian officials urged Assad to leave.
