The US Department of Defense announced today an estimated $988 million in new military aid to Ukraine as the Biden administration seeks to ramp up aid to Kiev before Donald Trump returns to the White House on January 20.

The new assistance includes unmanned aerial vehicles, missiles for the Himars missile launch systems and increased assistance for the maintenance of critical equipment, the Pentagon said in a statement.

The aid announced today will be provided through a mechanism whereby military equipment is purchased from the defense industry or from partners and not drawn from US stockpiles. Therefore, this aid is not expected to be available in the short term for Ukraine to use on the battlefield.

Donald Trump, who met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris tonight along with French President Emmanuel Macron, has been highly critical in recent months of the billions of dollars that Washington is releasing for Ukraine.

The president-elect has promised to resolve the war between Kiev and Moscow even before he was sworn in in January, without ever explaining how.

Ukraine’s European allies fear a possible disengagement of the United States from the conflict or even American pressure for a deal at the expense of Kiev.
