A tradition of beating women was secretly discovered by a news report. At a local festival in Germany, men hunted women and used horns to beat their buttocks. And, preferably, until they cannot sit down for several days.

This happened on the German island of Borkum in the North Sea. Every year, on December 5th. Until it was revealed and caused enormous outrage in the country. Now in 2024, German police stated that no assaults were recorded.

But, after all, what happened at this festival? This violent tradition was around 200 years old. It dates back to the time when men returned home at the end of the year after months of whaling at sea. And they tried to make it clear that they were “back in command”.

According to custom, during the festival, young men dress in costumes made of animal skin and feathers. Later in the night, the “hunt” for women began, with beatings. This part used to be reserved only for the island’s inhabitants, but last year two reporters managed to secretly film the attacks.

With the public commotion that was generated, the festival organizers emphasized that violence against women can no longer be part of the tradition. So, in order not to cancel the festival, the solution was to adapt it. This year, policing was reinforced, with zero tolerance for attacks. Read more (09/12/2024 – 1:02 pm)
