A black market is being created in Russia after McDonald’s announced the temporary closure of more than 800 restaurants in the countryamid the mass exodus of multinationals.
On the Russian classifieds site Avito, many people suddenly appeared selling Big Macs and other items from McDonald’s list at prices many times higher than what one would pay at a restaurant.
A salesman from Moscow advertises a Big Mac for $ 30, while this burger usually costs 135 rubles in Russia, or about $ 1.
Another has placed an ad for a “McDonald’s Breakfast,” which includes McMuffins, potato pancakes and sauces, for $ 18.
A salesman writes that he offers the items “to those who want to enjoy for the last time the taste of a bygone era”.
Some are even trying to sell McDonald’s packaging, with a chain paper bag selling for $ 373, without specifying if it contains any products.
A retailer advertises a McDonald’s glass for $ 74.
The news of the lockout in McDonald’s stores provoked strong reactions in Russia, with queues forming outside the restaurants, as the Muscovites hurried to get one last taste of fast food before closing.
Western media also featured photos of Russians filling their refrigerators with burgers from McDonald’s.
McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said in a March 8 employee briefing that it was impossible to predict when the chain would reopen, but the company is closely monitoring the situation.
