It was a pleasure to have dinner the other day with Governor Justin Trudeau of the great state of Canada, the US president-elect wrote
Donald Trump took a dig at Justin Trudeau today, calling him, in a post on his Truth Social network, “governor” instead of “prime minister”, a title given in the US to the head of state.
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other day with Governor Justin Trudeau of the great state of Canada,” the US president-elect wrote shortly after midnight.
In late November, Justin Trudeau traveled to Florida to meet with Donald Trump, in the wake of the tycoon’s threats to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico on all goods imported into the US, causing concern among their neighbors.
“I will be happy to see the governor again soon to continue our detailed discussions on tariffs and trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for everyone!” the Republican billionaire continued, writing on the Truth Social platform.
During that meeting, Donald Trump had suggested to Trudeau, conservative Fox News reported, that if Canada couldn’t afford the 25% tariffs, it could become the 51st US state, causing nervous laughter to the Canadian prime minister and others present.
According to unnamed sources, always on Fox News, the president-elect told Justin Trudeau that if prime minister were a better title, he might as well be governor of a 51st state.
After that dinner at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s residence, the president-elect hailed a “very productive meeting” and Trudeau spoke of a “great conversation.”
Donald Trump, the 45th and soon-to-be 47th president of the United States, is used to these kinds of “snaps,” especially on social media, that could otherwise be seen as jokes or veiled threats.
“Why are we subsidizing these countries?” Trump asked, referring to Canada and Mexico, during an NBC television interview that aired Sunday.
“If we’re going to subsidize them, let’s let them become a State,” he pointed out.
The former real estate mogul accuses trading partners Canada and Mexico of not doing enough, among other things, to stop illegal immigration across the US border and the drug trade.
