The removal of the dome of Hagia Sophia, a UNESCO world heritage museum that now functions as a mosque, was decided yesterday by the Turkish authorities, with the aim of its conservation and restoration.

As SKAI correspondent Manolis Kostidis reports from Istanbul, the works will start in April or May 2025.

On the outside of the dome, structural anomalies were detected in the lead covering of the dome and it was deemed necessary to strip the dome to preserve only the top as below are the famous mosaics.
