London, Thanasis Gavos

Guilty of murder of ten-year-old Sara Sharifafter years of brutal beatings, the father and stepmother of the little girl were sentenced on Wednesday by a London court, in a case whose brutality has shocked the British.

The trial revealed that little Sarah, who is of Pakistani origin, had been subjected to a series of tortures in the weeks leading up to her death, which occurred on August 8, 2023, at her home in Woking, south-west London.

Sarah had had her head covered with a hood, her hands tied, beaten with a cricket bat and even burned with an iron.

The day after her murder, her father Urfan Sharif, 42, fled to Islamabad with the rest of his familyi.e. five more children and his 30-year-old wife Beinas Batoul.

Two days later he phoned the British police from Pakistan crying saying that he had beaten his daughter to death against her will.

The pair were arrested on their arranged return to London on September 13. However, both denied the charge of murder. The girl’s uncle Malik Sharif, her father’s brother who had fled with the family to Pakistan, was acquitted of murder but found guilty of causing or allowing the death of a minor.

Their sentence will be announced next Tuesday.
