Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will undergo a second surgery on Thursday, following the first emergency operation for a hematoma near the brain, treating doctors announced today.

The 79-year-old Lula remains in the intensive care unit of the Syro-Lebanese Hospital in Sao Paulo and will undergo a middle meningeal artery embolization on Thursday morning, the medical release said.

The treating doctors also report that Lula did not experience any post-operative complications in the first 24 hours, he did physical therapy and was visited by members of his family.

The hematoma for which Lula was operated on was the result of a fall that the Brazilian president had, about two months ago, inside his home. On Monday night, while talking to congressional leaders in Brasilia, Lula complained of a severe headache that was getting worse and was taken to a nearby hospital for tests, his spokesman, Paulo Pimenta, said. An MRI showed intracranial bleeding and Lula was flown to Sao Paulo for emergency surgery.
