Medvedev hinted at possible annexation of other parts of Ukraine in the near future as the war continues
The former president and prime minister of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, hinted that it could soon be decided to annex other territories of Ukraine, where the war that began in February 2022 continues to rage.
Speaking at the conference of the ruling United Russia party yesterday Friday, Mr. Medvedev called it necessary to develop the four Ukrainian regions that have already been annexed—Danietsk. Lugansk, Zaporizhia, Kherson—, although they are not entirely controlled by the Russian armed forces.
The annexation of the four regions is not recognized by either Kyiv or most of the international community.
“This experience”, according to the former president, “may help if new, nearby areas become part of our country”, which is possible, according to him.
Mr. Medvedev retains influence in Russia. He remains chairman of the United Russia party and second-in-command in the Russian National Security Council. Although during his presidency he cultivated the profile of a pro-Western reformer, in recent years he has transformed, using increasingly harsh rhetoric and now considered a Kremlin hawk.
