Meeting with the UN special envoy for Syria – Several countries announced that they have been in contact with the country’s new authorities
Foreign delegations, although initially reluctant, have increased requests to gain contacts with the new Islamist authorities in Syria, a week after the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
From Syria, where he is on a visit, the UN special envoy for the country, Geir Pedersen, met with Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, head of the radical Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
In their meeting, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, now using his real name, Ahmed Al Sara, welcomed the UN official with western look – pants, shirt and jacket – having renounced, except for his “jihadist” name, and the guise of a fighter.
