Defense Minister Israel Katz reportedly told Knesset lawmakers that Israel is “closer than ever” to a deal to release the hostages in Gaza, fueling optimistic media reports that a deal is imminent.

Katz’s comments to the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee were made behind closed doors, but leaks of his remarks are widely reported in the Jewish press.

“Israel is closer than ever to a new hostage deal,” Katz is quoted as saying, adding that “the less said about this the better.”

Katz believes that the deal will be supported by most of the governing coalition and will not face internal obstacles.

He reportedly added that the deal would not include an indefinite cessation of hostilities, a measure sought by Hamas but opposed by many in Netanyahu’s far-right coalition.

“There is flexibility on the other side. They understand that we are not going to end the war,” the Israeli defense minister said according to the leaks.
