The resignation of the finance minister from the Trudeau government has caused a storm of reactions, reports CTV News
The developments for the government of the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, who is under pressure even to resign after the departure of the finance minister, are hectic.
As the news network CTV News reports, the Canadian prime minister is considering all options after the resignation of Chrystia Freeland, who is one of his closest allies.
In an explosive resignation letter released Monday morning, Freeland set off a firestorm of confusion and speculation in Parliament on the same day she was to table the fall economic statement, a document that typically includes key economic indicators such as the size of Canada’s deficit.
In the wake of the developments, the leaders of the Conservative Party and the separatist Bloc Quebec party called for elections. In fact, the NDP leader called on Trudeau to resign.
The finance minister’s resignation is a blow, analysts say, to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, marking the first open dissent by a cabinet member and raising questions about his tenure.
The revelation of the resignation letter came hours before Freeland announced the administration’s pledges to improve border security with the United States as part of an interim budget.
Freeland’s departure comes at a difficult time for Canada as incoming US President Donald Trump has warned he will impose 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico unless the two countries do more to curb the flow of undocumented immigrants and drugs in the United States.
In her resignation letter, Freeland said Trudeau tried to force her to resign from her position. Freeland is responsible for shaping Canada’s response to the incoming Trump administration as she leads a group of government officials who have been preparing for a change in leadership and policy in the US.
According to the New York Times, during a Zoom meeting on Friday, Trudeau asked Freeland to continue leading the team shaping the response to the Trump administration, but to step down as finance minister.
Freeland responded to his proposal by saying she could not credibly lead transition efforts without running the Treasury Department.
By all accounts, Freeland was the most experienced cabinet member in the Trudeau government to deal with the first Trump administration as it successfully renegotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement.
“For the past several weeks, you and I have been at odds over what is best for Canada’s future,” Freeland wrote to the prime minister, who later called Trump’s threatened tariffs a “serious challenge.”
“How we deal with the threat to our country right now will define us for a generation, and maybe longer,” Freeland said.
