A Chinese national was arrested a few days ago on suspicion of espionage near a German naval base in Kiel, public broadcaster WDR reported.
According to the report, the man was arrested on December 9 while taking pictures at the naval base in the port of Kiel and is still being held. He was initially arrested by the base’s security staff, but was later handed over to the police and the investigation is being carried out by the Office of the Anti-Crime Office in Schleswig-Holstein in cooperation with the Federal Military Counterintelligence Agency (BAMAD), which in its latest report noted that “the People’s Republic of China’s interest in information about the Bundeswehr remains high.” In the same report, he also said that “China aspires to be the world’s economic and military leader by 2049, and to (achieve) this goal, it will use cyber espionage, hybrid as well as classic espionage.”
As WDR notes, there has long been a strong concern about the security of the naval base in Kiel, as it is not only home to important military and naval assets, but also ThyssenKrupp’s headquarters for submarine construction and the “Centre of Excellence for NATO’s Shallow and Confined Water Operations (COE CSW), which is under German command.
Indicative of the intense concern about Chinese espionage in the Baltic Sea is the cancellation, last year, of the twinning of the city of Kiel with the Chinese city of Qingdao, which was initially approved by the German city.
