The scientific community is wary of Russian announcements about the anti-cancer drug – They say they will distribute it for free in early 2025
OR Russia announced that it had developed its own mRNA vaccine against him cancer and how it will start distributing free to its citizens in 2025. However, what is true and what do Greek scientists report about this far-fetched announcement?
First of all, let us mention that the news was announced on Radio Rossiya, by the General Director of the Medical Research Center of Radiology of the Russian Ministry of Health Andrei Kaprin. He claimed that the vaccine could affect any type of tumor, but for the first human trials it is planned to select patients with the most common forms: cancer of the lung, of breast and his gastrointestinal.
The vaccine, according to the Russian agency Tass, was developed in collaboration with several research centers and is expected to be released in early 2025.
OR Konstantina ThomopoulouOncologist Pathologist, speaking to and the show “Mismatched» states the following about the Russian vaccine: “The first results from preclinical studies are encouraginghowever so far we have no official clinical data. In other words, in order for a drug to be approved, its effectiveness and safety must be proven in larger and wider clinical studies and we must have officially published data, which does not exist in our case. There is a lack of official published data which makes us cautious.
The data from the large clinical studies are published in scientific articles and then received by the official authorities and thus the drug approvals are made. In this case we have nothing published on the clinical side.”
And he continues:
“There are a lot of vaccines being studied right now and there are studies going on in Europe and America and we still don’t have the final results and we’re not going to be able to displace, replace the mRNA vaccines with the specific effective treatments that we have at our disposal.”
In his turn, C. Captainpresident of the Hellenic Cancer Federation explains how: “We recognize the progress that science is making. Our approach is always about scientific documentation and we are always champions of innovation and progress. What Mrs. Thomopoulou mentioned is that there are no data. It’s just an on-air announcement and nothing more at the moment. We know that there are clinical studies in which our country also participates for mRNA technologies and we will reach a moment when a specific treatment will be created for a specific person and we know that in some forms of cancer this already has some successful results. Yes, these innovative technologies promise a lot for the future, we have positive steps as we must focus on the procedures followed and patient safety. We cannot talk about something that came in a simple announcement.”
