A total of 13 people died in the attack on December 19, 2016, while more than 70 people were injured, some of them seriously.
Today’s terrorist attack in Magdeburg evoked memories of the equally terrorist and deadly attack on the Christmas market in Berlin’s Breitscheidplatz eight years ago.
On December 19, 2016, an Islamic terrorist drove a truck into the Christmas market.
A total of 13 people died in the attack while more than 70 people were injured, some of them seriously. The perpetrator of that attack fled to Italy, where he was shot dead by police.
The perpetrator of the attack, whose name was Anis Amri and came from Tunisia, acted on the orders of a senior official of the Islamic State.
A few hours before the terrorist attack, Anis Amri, who arrived in Germany as a refugee from Italy in 2015, killed a Polish driver and stole his truck. He then crashed the 25-tonne truck into the crowded Christmas market, leaving behind casualties and seriously injured people.
After the attack, Anis Amri fled to Italy, where on December 23 he opened fire on police officers, who wanted to check his papers. The Tunisian fell dead during the exchange of fire. For a number of years, Amri was targeted by the German security authorities, who at some point came to the fatal conclusion that the Tunisian posed no danger.
