The Democratic chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee said Friday that Republicans in Congress are protecting Elon Musk’s investments in China by repealing provisions that restrict American investment.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro says in a letter that Musk, the CEO of electric car maker Tesla, may have subverted the government funding process to remove a provision regulating American investment in China, given his “extensive investments in China in strategic areas and his personal ties to the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party,” and calls into question the real reason for Musk’s opposition to original federal funding bill.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment, the Reuters news agency points out.

US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed billionaire Elon Musk to lead a program to cut government spending.
