North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has stressed the need to boost industrial production in areas outside the capital Pyongyang with the aim of economic development in the region, KCNA news agency reported.

Kim called for the modernization of industrial facilities in the region, improvements in the agricultural sector and “clear results every year, regardless of conditions.”

Kim Jong Un attended a factory opening ceremony in Songchon County, northeast of Pyongyang, on Friday and inspected products such as soy sauce and bean paste, according to KCNA.

Last year, North Korea’s nominal GDP reached 40.2 trillion won (26.7 billion euros), which was 1.7% of South Korea’s GDP (2,401.2 trillion won), according to the statistics Seoul service.

North Korea’s GDP has shrunk for three consecutive years since 2020, when Pyongyang closed its borders due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and only recovered last year.
