Europe’s leading right-wing figures seized on the painful blow to push an anti-immigrant and anti-Islam agenda
The attack on Christmas market in Magdeburg on Friday night caused wave of fury in Europe’s far right.
Leading right-wing figures from Geert Wilders in the Netherlands to Nigel Farage in Britain to Marine Le Pen in France have seized on the painful blow to push an anti-immigrant and anti-Islam agenda, Politico comments.
Tech billionaire and key adviser to US President-elect Donald Trump, Elon Musk, has slammed German authorities, urging the chancellor Olaf Solz to resign.
Alice Weidel, president of Germany’s anti-immigration party Alternative for Germany (AfD), pointedly asked “When will this madness end?” while expressing her condolences to the victims of the attack.
The far-right AfD is seeking to boost support ahead of Germany’s February 23 snap federal election. The far-right party is currently second in the polls and scored strongly in state elections earlier this year.
Geert Wilders, the far-right Dutch politician who has promoted an anti-Islam and hard-line anti-immigration message for years, called the incident “barbaric” and he called for closed borders in Europe.
“Another barbaric attack in Europe — this time by a man from Saudi Arabia,” Wilders said. “Once again, an incredible number of innocent victims, dead and injured, we must mourn. Once again politicians crying crocodile tears. I’ve been saying this for over 20 years: stop with these open borders.”
Le Pen, who is eyeing her own chance to seize power in Paris, also took aim at Islamism after the attack.
“Once again, Islamist brutality is striking terror in the heart of Europe. This act of war against a symbol of our culture is heartbreaking,” Le Pen said, adding: “Our thoughts tonight are with the victims and families of this massacre committed in the middle of the Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany.”
British politician Nigel Farage, a leading Brexiteer and long-time critic of immigration who has been a thorn in the side of the ruling centre-left Labor Party, also blamed the violence on border policies, saying: “We have allowed people who hate us and our values in Europe. Christmas is their goal. Any guess why?”
X owner Elon Musk, who has increasingly backed European far-right figures and backed Germany’s far-right AfD earlier on Friday, retweeted Farage’s tweet.
Musk separately noted: “[Ο Γερμανός Καγκελάριος Όλαφ] Solz should resign immediately. Incompetent fool.”
