Every stay Christmasthe North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) tracks Santa’s journey through the skies in real time.

This cherished tradition dates back to 1955, when a typographical error in a department store ad led a small child to call a military command center in Colorado asking to speak to Santa Claus.

Air Force Col. Harry Shoup, who received the call that night, immediately understood and assured the child that he was Santa Claus. As the phone calls poured in, Shope assigned an officer to chat with the children and answer their questions, beginning a custom that NORAD continued after its creation in 1958.

For decades now, every year on this day, NORAD has temporarily set aside its normal duties to answer children’s questions about Santa’s journey and gift delivery.

Each year, at least 100,000 children call the organization to ask about Santa Claus. Millions more watch online as Santa Claus travels across the earth’s meridians.
