Syria’s new authorities burned large quantities of narcotics today, including one million pills of captagon, an amphetamine produced on an industrial scale under the rule of Bashar al-Assad, two members of the security forces told AFP.

“We found a large amount of Captagon, about a million pills,” a member of those forces, who identified himself as Osama, told AFP, his face covered and wearing the uniform of the “Public Security Administration”.
Bashar al-Assad’s administration was known for producing Captagon, for one amphetamine that comes from a drug that is supposed to treat it narcolepsy or them attention deficit disordersturning the country into narco-state and flooding the markets of the Middle East, neighboring Iraq or Gulf countries.
In recent days, in aircraft hangars or military bases, the coalition of Islamist armed organizations has discovered hundreds of small bags containing Captagon pills.
Today, the destruction of drugs took place in the former “security sector” of Damascus, in the district of Kafar Sousse.
“Security forces of the new government of Syria discovered a warehouse of drugs during inspections” of the security sector, another member of those forces, who introduced himself as Hamza, told AFP.

“This is not the first initiative of this kind, the security forces have also found other warehouses (…) and drug manufacturing sites and destroyed them”, noted.
An AFP investigation revealed that Captagon had turned Syria into a narco-state with an illegal industry of more than $10 billion.
