The report is based on testimonies and statements from medical and nursing staff – Many were burned, beaten or sexually abused by the kidnappers
Homers in Gaza Strip who have been released, including children, have suffered physical and sexual violence, according to a report by Israel’s health ministry set to be submitted to UN.
The report is based on testimony from former hostages and statements from medical and nursing staff who cared for them after their release who allege that many were burned, beaten, tied up, deprived of water, food and medical care or sexually abused by their captors.
In a statement, the Israeli Ministry of Health specifies that the report will be submitted within the week to Alice Jill EdwardsUN special rapporteur on torture.
The depositions concern more than 100 Israeli and foreign hostages who were released during the brief truce in late November 2023. They include 30 children and teenagers, some of whom were abused.
“One of the freed hostages states that she was sexually assaulted by a Hamas terrorist at gunpoint…Some women testified that they were restrained tied to beds while their captors looked on,” the report said.
Israel has already released reports and testimonies about hostage conditions in the Gaza Strip, which include allegations of violence and sexual abuse, which Hamas has denied.
“The horror experienced by the hostages reveals to the eyes of the world the brutality of the enemy Israel is facing,” commented Israel’s health minister Uriel Busso calling on the international community to step up pressure on Hamas to release the hostages remaining in the Gaza Strip.
In recent weeks, progress has been made in talks to reach a deal on hostages and a cease-fire in Gaza, but the two camps accuse each other of an impasse in negotiations.
