A veteran of conflict coverage, Pierre Zakrzewski, a cameraman killed in Ukraine, is described by colleagues at Fox News as a professional with a positive spirit, boundless energy and a nose for the news.
According to a statement from the television network, he was killed after the vehicle he was in was hit in Horenka, on the outskirts of Kiev, on Monday (14). Zakrzewski was with another broadcaster, Benjamin Hall, who was injured and is hospitalized.
The cameraman lived in London and had been in Ukraine since February. In a statement released by Fox News, CEO Suzanne Scott said he was a versatile professional who played the roles of photographer, editor and producer with “unparalleled passion and talent”.
“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we share the news this morning about our beloved cameraman,” said Scott. “Pierre was a war zone photographer who covered virtually all international reporting for Fox News, from Iraq to Afghanistan to Syria,” she said.
“His passion and talent as a journalist is unparalleled.”
Fox News president and executive editor Jay Wallace said in the same statement that he always had “an extra sense of security coming to a story and seeing it with camera in hand.” “The legacy of his positive spirit, boundless energy and eye for history will continue,” he added.
The network sent condolences to the cameraman’s wife, Michelle, and the rest of the family. On Twitter, Fox journalist John Roberts said he has worked with Zakrzewski several times around the world. “It was an absolute treasure,” he wrote.
This is the second recorded death of a foreign journalist in this war – Ukrainian Yevhenii Skaum, a cameraman for a local TV, also died covering the conflict. This Sunday (13), American Brent Renaud died after being shot at when passing through a checkpoint. Two people who were with him were injured, including journalist Juan Diego Arredondo.
