It is the first time in South Korea’s history that a sitting president has been the target of such a judicial decision.
Court of South Korea issued arrest warrant of the pautena president Yoon Seok-geil over his failed attempt to declare martial law in the Asian nation earlier this month, investigators handling the case said today.
“The arrest warrant and search warrant against President Yoon Seok-geil (…) were issued this morning,” the agency investigating the ousted president said in a statement.
No timetable was set for the continuation of these procedures, he clarified.
She is the first time in South Korea’s history which president in office is the target of such a decision of justice. Typically, Yoon Seok-geil remains in office, awaiting the Constitutional Court’s decision on the decision to remove him from office, which was adopted by the South Korean parliament on December 14.
He has, however, been suspended from his duties until the country’s top judicial institution confirms or annuls his impeachment. He has a deadline for this until the middle of June.
Mr. Yun shocked the country on December 3 when, to everyone’s astonishment, announced that he had declared martial law and sent the army into parliament to silence it. But he was forced to take these measures back under overwhelming pressure from the members of the national delegation and thousands of citizens who took to the streets.
The one-time star prosecutor, 64, defied three summonses to appear for questioning over the attempted coup, leading to the issuance of a warrant for his arrest yesterday.
His faction’s caretaker leader, Gwon Song-dong, called it inappropriate to issue an arrest warrant against a sitting president.
