At least three people were killed and more than 20 injured after an explosion fireworks on New Year’s Eve in a residential neighborhood of Honolulu, officials said.

The explosion occurred at a home about 5 km west of Fort Shafter, the headquarters of the US Army in the Pacific.

Videos posted on social media by neighbors show a series of explosions with blinding light outside a home.

Honolulu police said the explosion occurred from Bengali which instead of exploding in the air were launched in the direction of another box of fireworks, which then exploded as well.

Two women died at the scene and a third died later in hospital, police said.

Twenty-six people were taken to hospitals, many with serious burns. THE

It is not clear how many are injured in total as some may have fled the scene before ambulances arrived.
