“Twelve people were killed, including two children,” prosecutor Adriana Nastic told the media. The previous count was at least ten dead. The attacker killed himself with a bullet to the head while surrounded by police.

The gunman opened fire yesterday, Wednesday, at around 18:30 (local and Greek time) in the village of Baitse, near the town of Cetinje, according to police.

The victims died in five different locations, the first four inside the restaurant, the prosecutor said.

“All locations were inspected and evidence was gathered,” he said.

“The work of prosecutors and police is ongoing to determine the circumstances in which this happened,” he added.

Four people have also been seriously injured and have been transferred to a hospital in the capital, Podgorica.

The lives of three of them are in danger, Health Minister Vojislav Simun said.

Police ruled out a “conflict between organized crime gangs” and clarified that the weapons used were illegal.

The government has declared three days of national mourning from today.

Who was the perpetrator of the attack?

The gunman, identified by police as Aleksandar Martinovic, 45, tried to kill himself near his home in the town of Cetinje after being cornered by police.

“When he saw that he was in a desperate situation, he attempted suicide. He did not succumb to his injuries on the spot, but while being transported to the hospital,” Saranovic told Montenegrin state broadcaster RTCG.

According to police, Martinovic had a history of illegal gun possession.
