New warnings and danger “bells” ahead of the three-day snow that is going to hit large parts of the country from Saturday
The London is faced with the first important one snowfall years this weekend after the capital was put under a three-day warning Met Office for snowfall.
According to the Sky Newsmeteorologists issued an alert for almost the entire Britain and her Wales and parts thereof Scotlandwhich is valid from midday on Saturday until 09:00 on Monday.
While the amount of snow set to fall in London has not been confirmed, around 5cm (2in) is widely expected across the Midlands, Wales and northern England.
The warning is due to be updated before the weekend, but the highest totals of up to 30cm are currently expected over high ground in Wales and the Pennines.
The last time any Met Office weather station reported snow on the ground in Greater London was on 12/12/2022 when Northolt in west London got 1cm (0.4in).
The Met Office does not have many stations reporting the depth of snow in the capital – and since that year there have been incidents of light snowfall, the most recent of which was on 19/11/2024, in an Arctic cold snap that saw temperatures plummet below zero, trains get canceled and cars get stuck.
There was also some snow in London on 8/3/2023 when 4cm (1.6in) accumulated just outside the capital at Amersham in Buckinghamshire – although no snow accumulated at any of the London weather sites managed by the Met Office .
Snow fell in London during the lockdown on 24/1/2021 as people were seen sledding down a hill in Greenwich Park and making snowmen in Battersea Park.
The new snow warning issued covers all areas of England except the South West, most of Wales and parts of southern Scotland.
