House Speaker Mike Johnson was re-elected as speaker of the House of Representatives after a thriller vote, eventually securing the necessary 218 votes needed.

Mike Johnson was able to overturn at almost the last minute the result that indicated he was going to lose the first round of voting for his re-election, as he did not receive the support of at least three members of the Republican Party.

However, two Republicans who originally voted against Johnson changed their votes.

Johnson, who needed a majority of votes to retain the seat, received 218 votes to Democrat Hakeem Jeffries’ 215 in a total of 434 members.

Mike Johnson said he made no promises to Republican Reps. Keith Self and Ralph Norman, who switched their votes and allowed Johnson to win the seat in the first round of voting.

Johnson, who could lose by just one vote with a slim majority of 219 Republicans in the House, needed the support of both as Republican Rep. Thomas Massey maintained his no vote.

In his first statement, the president-elect told CNN he is “ready to get to work.”
