Donald Trump Jr.’s visit is private, says Greenland Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Miningwak Kleist
Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of the US president-elect, is set to visit Greenland today after his father again expressed his intention to buy the huge island.
Donald Trump Jr.’s visit is private, Greenland’s Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Miningwak Kleist said, explaining that no meetings with representatives of the Greenlandic government are planned.
“We have not been informed of his schedule and therefore this is a private visit,” Kleist pointed out. He added that Trump Jr. is expected to land in Greenland around 15:00 Greek time and stay there for about four to five hours.
A source with knowledge of the visit told Reuters that Trump Jr. plans to record videos for a podcast in Greenland, adding that he will not meet with officials or politicians.
Greenland is an autonomous region of Denmark with a population of just 57,000. It has rich reserves of oil, natural gas and minerals, but its development is slow and its inhabitants depend mainly on fishing and annual subsidies from Denmark.
Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, is closer to New York than Copenhagen.
“Greenland is open and anyone who wishes to visit is welcome,” commented the island’s foreign ministry.
Trump, who is sworn in as US president on January 20, said on the social networking site Truth Social that his son would be accompanied by “representatives” on his visit to Greenland.
“Greenland is an incredible place and its people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our nation,” he added.
“We’re going to protect (Greenland) and we’re going to take care of it,” 78-year-old Trump said, pledging to “MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN.”
The Republican accompanied his post with a video of a man posing as a resident of Greenland wearing a red Trump hat with the slogan “Make America Great Again” and saying he was in favor of the US buying the island.
Trump had expressed his intention to buy Greenland during his first term (2017-2021), which both the island’s and Denmark’s governments had rejected at the time.
Shortly before Christmas, Trump had emphasized that “for reasons of national security and for the freedom of the entire world, the United States considers ownership and control of Greenland to be an absolute necessity.”
The island’s government had responded that Greenland is not for sale.
In fact, last week the Prime Minister of Greenland Mute Eggende in his speech for the new year repeated his request for independence from Denmark, considering that it is necessary for Greenland to break “the shackles of colonialism” in order to build its future. It was not mentioned at all in the US.
Aaja Chemnitz, a Greenlandic member of the Danish parliament, said the idea of the US buying the island should be flatly rejected.
“I don’t want to be a pawn in Trump’s dreams of expanding his empire to include our country,” he said.
