Kellogg is now expected to visit Ukraine after Trump takes office, though no date has been set according to sources
US President-elect Donald Trump’s new envoy to Ukraine has postponed a fact-finding visit to Kiev and other European capitals until after Trump’s inauguration on January 20, according to four sources with knowledge of the trip’s planning.
Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, who is set to serve as Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, had originally planned a trip to Kiev to meet with the Ukrainian leadership in early January, Reuters reported last month. His team also arranged meetings with officials in other European capitals, including Rome and Paris.
But the trip, which would have marked the first time officials from the new Trump administration would go to Kiev since the Nov. 5 election, was postponed, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Kellogg is now expected to visit Ukraine after Trump takes office, though no date has been set, the sources said.
It was not immediately clear why Kellogg was delaying the visit.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sibyha said today that the visit of the US President’s envoy Keith Kellogg to Kiev will take place “in due course”.
“We are happy for all the visits of our American friends. This is our first position. The second is that we very much hope that after the inauguration the first visits of officials already appointed by the new government will take place in Ukraine” said Sibikha.
According to the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, a team from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently in contact with Kellogg’s representatives to clearly define the time frame of the visit.
Trump repeatedly said on the campaign trail that he could resolve the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office, but he has made little progress toward that end. Nevertheless, trying to quickly defuse the conflict remains a key priority of his incoming administration.
Neither Kellogg himself nor a spokesman for the Ukrainian embassy in Washington immediately responded to requests for comment.
