Moscow and Kyiv are discussing the Austrian or Swiss model of demilitarization of Ukraine, said Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky, head of the group that talks to the Ukrainians on an almost daily basis about the ceasefire.
He explained that Kyiv proposed the creation of an “Austrian or Swedish version of a demilitarized state in Ukraine, but with its own forces.”
Medinsky clarified that this is being discussed at the level of leadership of the defense ministries of the two countries.
“We need a peaceful, free, independent Ukraine, a neutral – not a member of a military bloc, not a member of NATO – a country that will be our friend, our neighbor, with which we develop relations, build our future and which will not be a springboard “for military and economic attacks against our country,” Medinsky said, describing Moscow’s goals.
He stressed that this is why “literally every number and every letter in the agreements” is being discussed very carefully with the Ukrainian side.
“We want this to be an agreement for future generations, so that our children also live in a world whose foundations will be laid in this conventional process,” Medisnky explained.
The head of the Russian delegation also spoke about the sanctions imposed on Russia, stating that “they are a full-scale and unprecedented economic war against Russia.
