European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is trying to schedule a meeting with Donald Trump in Florida ahead of the president-elect’s inauguration, according to two people cited by Bloomberg.

European Union officials and Trump aides have been in talks, but it is unclear whether a visit to his Florida estate can be arranged by Jan. 20, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Efforts for a meeting between the two have been further hampered because von der Leyen has not yet returned to Brussels after the holidays as she tries to recover from a serious bout of pneumonia in her home country of Germany.

EU officials have so far struggled to open channels of communication with senior counterparts in the incoming government. Trump has repeatedly claimed that Europe treats the US badly and has pledged to impose tariffs while demanding increased defense spending.

On Thursday afternoon, von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa issued identical messages saying they were committed to strengthening the transatlantic bond.

“We look forward to a positive engagement with the incoming US administration, based on our shared values and shared interests,” they wrote separately. “In a tough world, Europe and the US are stronger together.”

Von der Leyen enjoyed a particularly close relationship with outgoing President Joe Biden and visited the White House several times to coordinate policy on Ukraine and China. Now, European officials are worried that Trump may withdraw US aid to Ukraine and initiate communication with Russia.

The EU has privately pledged to work closely with the Trump team on China as well, but European officials have warned that such cooperation is only possible if Trump does not target the EU with tariffs.
