Firefighting plane grounded after crash – Drone was flying without permission in Los Angeles neighborhood
A drone that was flying, without authorization, in a neighborhood of his Los Angeles which was consumed by the fires, struck and damaged a firefighting plane, the county fire chief said.
The Super Scooper, a vital firefighting aircraft, is grounded after the crash. It will not be available before Monday, he explained Anthony Marrone at a press conference he gave.
Its pilots did not notice the impact. But they saw a “fist-sized” hole in one of its wings and landed safely.
The collision took place in the sky of the suburb Pacific Palisades.
“We only have two Super Scoopers. The important thing is to understand that if you fly a drone over a wildfire, all of our aerial operations stop,” Maroun said, calling the practice “illegal and dangerous.”
“If you think it’s fun to send a drone into these zones … You will be arrested, prosecuted and punished to the maximum penalty provided by law,” the prosecutor warned Nathan Hotchman.
