Its prime minister Denmark Mette Frederiksen he told the US president-elect Donald Trump that only the Greenland will have to decide on its future, supporting its position after the American’s public desire to buy the island, according to Politico.

Trump has expressed in recent weeks a desire to buy the mineral-rich island, even leaving the door open to using military force to make his wish come true.

According to a press release from her office after the two leaders spoke by phone on Wednesday, Frederiksen reiterated to Trump Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egende’s assurance that “Greenland is not for sale.”

The Danish prime minister said last week that she had asked to speak to Trump but had not yet heard back. At the time, he assured that there was “no reason to believe” that Trump was indeed planning to invade Greenland.

Frederiksen told Danish news network TV2 in an interview after her call with Trump that their conversation “confirmed” that “there is a lot of American interest in Greenland.” The phone call does not seem to have brought the matter to a conclusion, with the two leaders agreeing to continue the dialogue.

Trump has not spoken publicly about the phone call, choosing instead to repost on social media the results of a 2019 poll that found 68 percent of Greenlanders supported independence from Denmark.

During their 45-minute conversation, Frederiksen also “stressed the importance of strengthening security in the Arctic” and reminded Trump of the strong trade relations between the two countries and more generally between the US and the EU.

The two leaders also discussed the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as relations with China.
