According to the museum’s announcement, the employee entered the building, gained access to the systems and then arrested. The incident resulted in the temporary shutdown of certain rooms on Friday, while temporary reports remain closed.

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed the arrest of a man in the museum, who was released on a guarantee, while the investigation is ongoing. The museum announced that access to the weekend will be limited, with priority for members and those who already have tickets.

According to Sky News, part of London’s permanent collection closed on Friday, while temporary reports will remain closed over the weekend.

Museum’s representative stated that ‘We are working hard to bring the museum back in full operation, but unfortunately our temporary reports have been closed today and will remain so on the weekend – ticket holders have been notified and offered refunds

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called on Thursday, January 23 at 20.25 to report that a man had entered the British Museum and caused damage to the Museum’s Security and Informatics systems.

“Police immediately intervened and arrested a man about 50 years as a suspect for burglary and criminal damage”
