The series “Servant of the People”, starring the current Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, can now be seen by Netflix subscribers in the United States. The title, which ran for three seasons between 2015 and 2019, was being disputed by several streaming platforms.
Netflix had already counted on the production in its American catalog between 2017 and 2021. With the war in Ukraine and Zelensky’s prominent role in real life, many people were interested in seeing or reviewing the show that made him famous.
In the series, Zelensky appears with history professor Vasyl Petrovych, who ends up being elected president of Ukraine after his speech about corruption went viral on social media. With the success of the production in the country, the actor himself applied for (and won) the 2019 elections.
The rights to the series belong to the Swedish group Eccho Rights, which has also licensed the series to Channel 4 in the UK, MBC in the Middle East, ANT 1 in Greece and PRO TV in Romania, among other buyers. In Brazil, there is still no forecast of exhibition.
“The series is a comedy, but also an important document where Zelenski comes from,” said Nicola Söderlund, manager of Eccho, in a statement. “Its fictional president is a normal man who grows up in his role as a heroic and adored leader.”
“While the real-world scenario faced by Zelensky and the Ukrainian people is much darker and scarier than the series’ comedy, there are obvious parallels to the real-world situation,” he says. “And ‘Servant of the People’ is a fascinating, important and historic piece of television.”
