Assistants of Ilon Musk who took over the management of the Human Resources Government Service excluded High Public Officers Access
Ilon Musk assistants who have managed the US Government Human Resources Service have locked high -ranking public officials outside computers containing the personal data of millions of federal employees, according to two officials.
After being sworn in president 11 days ago, Donald Trump launched a broad reform of the government, dismissing and outsourcing hundreds of public officials, with the aim of restricting bureaucracy and putting his supporters in his positions.
Musk, the billionaire owner of Tesla and X, has undertaken to reduce the size of the federal state – 2.2 million employees. He proceeded quickly, installing his associates in the service called the Personnel Management Office (OPM).
The two officials, who spoke anonymously at the Reuters agency because they were afraid of retaliation, said that some of the Higher Career Employees at OPM was recalled to certain data systems of that service. The systems include a huge database (Enterprise Human Resources Integration) containing birth dates, social security numbers, ratings, home addresses, wage grades and the service of government officials.
“We do not know what they do with computers and data systems. This causes great concern. There is no supervision. There is really a problem of cyber security and espionage, “said one official.
Executives locked out can still be linked and accessed to certain services, such as e -mail, but not see the huge volume of data covering every aspect of federal employees’ work.
Musk, OPM, representatives of his new team and the White House did not respond to the request for a comment.
The OPM has sent memoranda to employees, which does not keep the usual dry style of government announcements, urging civil servants to resign and go on holiday “to their dream destination”.
Don Mainhan, a professor at the Ford School of Public Administration at the University of Michigan, said that actions inside OPM raise concerns about whether Congress maintains the supervision of that service. “It becomes more difficult for anyone outside the narrow circle of Musk knowing what is going on,” the professor said.
A group consisting of now and former MASKI employees took over OPM administration on January 20, on the day of Trump’s swearing -in. They placed sofas on the fifth floor of the building, where the director’s office is located, one employee said.
The bed sofas were placed there so that the team could work 24 hours a day.
Musk had placed beds on the offices of the X platform when he acquired it in 2022, so employees would work longer hours.
“It looks like a hostile takeover,” the worker commented.
The new OPM officials also took off the organization’s chief executive, Katie Malagiou, from her office and transferred it to another floor.
