Fears are running high that Moldova could be the next target of Vladimir Putin. According to the sky news channel on Thursday, citing a relevant post by a journalist, the Russian embassy in the country asks Russian-Russian speakers to contact it by sending examples of “discrimination” or “acts of violence”.
Journalist Michael Byrd says Moldovans fear it could be used “As proof” for Russia “to develop forces to ‘protect’ the Russians who are under threat.”
Moldova is a country that belonged to the Soviet Union and has been in favor of the EU perspective.
A Russian invasion is of particular concern due to the Russian-backed secession of Transnistria, on the Moldavian-Ukrainian border. Although the conflict there is considered “frozen”, if Russia took control of eastern Ukraine then it would be easy to cross into Moldova via Transnistria.
At the same time, the Russian military claims that about 14,000 Russian soldiers were killed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
