US President Donald Trump is expected to sign the third presidential memorandum with which he will restore the “maximum pressure” strategy against Iran while remaining committed to preventing Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon, a US official said.

The move restores US tough policy towards Iran that Trump implemented throughout his first term. Trump has accused his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, of weakening US determination against Iran.

The official told Reuters that Trump’s mandate would authorize the US Finance Minister to impose “maximum financial pressure” on Iran, which will include sanctions and imposition mechanisms on those who violate the applicable sanctions.

As part of the strategy of maximum pressure, the Trump government will launch a campaign “with the aim of resetting Iran’s oil exports,” the official said.

US representatives to the United Nations will work with key allies to “restore international sanctions and restrictions towards Iran,” the official said.
