He signed a memorandum that restores the “maximum pressure” strategy and provides for sanctions and measures to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons
Donald Trump made another power demonstration move on Tuesday, targeting Iran this time.
The US president has signed a presidential memorandum that restores the “maximum pressure” strategy against Tehran, with the aim of preventing the Islamic Republic from gaining nuclear weapons and resetting its oil exports.
Speaking from the Oval Office on Tuesday, Tram said Tehran is very close to gaining nuclear weapons and this should not be allowed, adding that the US has the right to block sales of Iranian oil in third countries.
At the same time, however, he said he would be willing to meet with his Iranian counterpart in order to try to persuade Tehran to abandon her nuclear program.
The move restores the harsh policy that Washington had adopted against Tehran and during Trump’s first term.
According to a US official in Reuters, the Presidential Memorandum authorizes the US Finance Minister to impose “maximum financial pressure” on Iran, which will include sanctions and imposition mechanisms on those who violate the applicable sanctions.
US representatives to the United Nations will work with key allies to “restore international sanctions and restrictions on Iran,” the official added.
