More than 20,000 people demonstrated earlier tonight at Vienna against the possible formation of government under The far -right party of freedom (Fpö).

The protesters marched in the center of the Austrian capital, from the Chancellor to the headquarters of today’s ruling People’s Party (ÖVP), which is negotiating a government coalition with the far -right. By slogans such as ‘Human rights instead of far -right people’ And “Kickl is not the Chancellor of the People”, the protesters also reminded the 25th anniversary of the first collaboration of ÖVP and FPö. In 2000, the two parties agreed in cooperation, but with Chancellor the leader of the center -right People’s Party, Wolfgang Sisel. Now things have been reversed and the new Chancellor will probably be FPö leader Herbert Kikl.

“Governmental negotiations are in a difficult phase but have not failed,” He said a spokesman for ÖVP, referring to the talks, has been evolving for four weeks without results. The disagreements concern, among other things, the banking contribution that the Freedom Party is calling for, but also the demand for the People’s Party to commit the new government to its participation in the European Union and not tolerate influences from abroad – especially Russia. The FPö, however, is consistently critical of the government and is friendly to the Kremlin.

If the two parties have not reached an agreement by tomorrow (Wednesday), the current procedure will be the longest in time since the end of World War II. Before the two parties began the conversations, the attempt to form a government under ÖVP, with the Social Democrats (SPö) and the Liberal Neos, had failed.

The elections were held on September 29, 2024 and the Freedom Party was a winner with 28.8%, compared to 26.3% of the former Chancellor’s People’s Party Carl Nehamer, who, however, had ruled out the possibility of working with Herbert Kikl. After his departure and take over Övp’s leadership from Christianthe cooperation became feasible and both parties began negotiations.
