US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has assured today that Washington will continue to support international aid programs after reviewing the needs of a global scale.

“Now we have to work from base to the top and not the other way around, to determine which programs should be excluded,” Rubio told reporters, from Guatemala where he is making an official visit.

Rubio again accused the International Development Service (USAID) of not responding to Trump’s demands to review the funding of its programs.

“We would prefer to make it more co -ordinated, from high to low, but we didn’t have cooperation” on USAID,, he added.

This service has been under its supervision.

“This is not a charity. The resources are not private. It’s money for American taxpayers. We have the obligation to spend them wisely, “he said.

President Donald Trump has announced the freezing of US aid abroad, with a few exceptions, for 90 days, until he finds out if this assistance is in line with his foreign policy goals. All USAID staff will be on administrative leave on Friday.

Ilon Musk, to whom Trump has commissioned to cut the federal government, had said on Monday that USAID would “close”.

USAID is an independent service founded by Congress in 1961 and manages a budget of more than $ 40 billion to provide humanitarian or development aid worldwide.
