At least two people were killed and 41 were injured today, when a bridge collapsed, while crossing one bus and another vehicle in northern Peru.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight, local time, on the Chankai Bridge, 75 kilometers north of Lima, on the Pan -American motorway connecting Northern Peru with the capital.

The driver and a passenger were dead from the bus wreckage. Another 41 people were injured and hospitalized, the Ministry of Health said.

More than 50 police and 100 firefighters are involved in rescue operations, the interior ministry said.

The two -storey bus, which had at least 50 passengers, headed to the seaside town of Tsibotos.

The 60 -meter -long bridge collapsed due to structural failure at the central pole level“Cecilia Martin, Deputy Director of the Disaster Response Service in the Municipality of Wales told the RPP radio station.

The bridge was built in the 1960s and, according to many media, its foundations were disintegrated by the waters of the river Chankai.
