OSCE investigates human rights violations in Russian invasion of Ukraine

by

The research of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is in full swing (OSCE) for human rights violations and atrocities committed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The investigative mission, launched after 45 countries invoked a rare OSCE mechanism used to investigate human rights concerns, the Moscow Mechanism, is led by three experts selected by Ukraine from a list of OSCE experts.

“The mission has already begun and the experts have begun their work, “said Katia Andrews, spokeswoman for the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).

“The mission itself will last about three weeks, after which Ukraine will have the opportunity to comment on the report before it is finalized.” Andrus added that the Agency has received a lot of information from various sources and will be open to all research.

It is noted that the OSCE does not have the power to legally punish Russia if it finds evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity, but their evidence can be given to other bodies that have this power.

The Moscow Mechanism is a serious step and, according to the OSCE, has been activated only nine other times since its inception in 1991. Most recently it was used in 2020 to investigate human rights violations in Belarus. Russia, Ukraine and Belarus are all members of the OSCE.
