The Senate approved tonight, by a marginal majority, the appointment of Mrs Patel to the Federal Police (FBI) leadership, despite the reactions of the Democratic and some Republican senators.
In a total of 100 senators, 51 voted “yes” to the appointment of President Donald Trump. The remaining 49, including two Republicans, voted against him.
The 44 -year -old former federal prosecutor is criticized for defending Trump’s supporters who invaded the Capitol on January 6, 2021, but also because he previously expressed his support for the far -right, Qanon conspiracy movement.
During his hearing in the Senate last month, Patel promised that there would be no “political retaliation” against FBI agents.
Patel, son of Indian immigrants, born in New York, had also served in the first Trump government (2017-21), in various posts. He will succeed in the FBI leadership, Christopher Ray, who resigned after Trump’s victory in last November’s presidential election.
