The perpetrator had taken hostages before exchanging shooting with police – five injured from the episode
Man armed with pistol took hostage in a hospital in Pennsylvania Last Saturday, before shooting and killing a police officer and injuring 5 other people and then dead when the class enforcement forces intervened, authorities said.
The armed man entered the UPMC MEMORIAL Hospital to Yorkto Pennsylvania (northeast), and headed directly to the Intensive Care Unit, where he took hostage members of the staff, explained the head of the York County Prosecutor’s Office, Tim Barker during a press conference. A member of the nursing staff and foreman were injured by his fire, while a doctor was slightly injured when a bullet scratched by his body.
Then, the suspect and police exchanged fire in a corridor, where the gunman went, holding a woman, a member of the staff, with her hands tied up, Mr Barker added.
Andrew Douarte, a police officer, was killed by the armed fire, according to officials. Two more police officers were injured – they are in stable condition, as are the nurse and the foreman.
Governor Josh Sapiro visited the hospital after the tragic incident and praised police Douarte and his colleagues because they saved the lives of others. “Here in York County today we saw the best and worst of humanity,” he told the press.
The suspect, according to the authorities, was 49 years old and was called Daijenis Arkeindzel-Ortis, had contacted the ICU earlier in the week for “some other person”, according to prosecutor Barker’s chief. He added that he has no more information on the potential motivation of yesterday’s episode.
