The funeral is attended by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakzi, an Iraqi delegation including Shiite politicians and militia administrators as well as a Yemeni Houthi delegation.
The funeral aims to show a strong Hezbollah after a blow from the Israeli war, which claimed the lives of most leadership members and to thousands of fighters and caused disasters in southern Lebanon. The impact on Hezbollah became even greater than the overthrow of her ally, Bashar al-Assad, in Syria.
The memorial service will also be honored by Hassem Siafentin, who led Hezbollah for a week after Nasrala’s death before he was killed by Israel himself, showing how deeply the Israeli intelligence service had infiltrated the organization. Siafentin will be buried in the south on Monday.
After his death, Nassrala was temporarily buried next to his son, Hadi, who died fighting for Hezbollah in 1997.
The official funeral was planned in such a way as to give time to withdraw Israeli forces from South Lebanon based on the terms of the US -backed ceasefire, which ended last year’s war.
Although Israel has largely retired from South Lebanon, its troops continue to hold five hills in the area, which Hezbollah fought for years to liberate from the Israeli forces before retiring in 2000.
The conflict escalated after Hezbollah opened fire in support of its ally, Palestinian Hamas, in the outbreak of Gaza war on October 8, 2023.
